Often when searching for a True Antique Wood or Coal Burning Stove, shipping is often not offered, as the Seller refuses anything but Local Pick-up. Now, as an Established Third Generation Stove Shop In New Hampshire, I want to state that shipping of a quality Antique Stove is not out of the question by any means. A Restored or Excellent Original Stove can be dis-assembled and carefully packed for Shipping. And usually for quite a reasonable cost! My experience has been that Sellers that do not wish to ship usually know that the Stove will literally dis-integrate upon dis-assembly. A true restored or excellent original stove can be broken down for shipping quite easily in most cases.
One thing to keep in mind is the fact that contrary to popular belief, Cast Iron is indeed fragile. Dropping a Cast Iron Antique Stove Part on a cement floor can literally end up in several small pieces. Shipping precautions can easily be undertaken to insure safe delivery. Thus, as a rule of thumb, a Seller that does not want to ship the Stove, either does not have the expertise to do so, or realizes that the Stove cannot be dis-assembled without damage, or, understandably just doesn't want to deal with the aggrevation. Keep this in mind when Buying.
In Summation, Buying from an Established Antique Stove Dealer will usually eliminate this issue, asthey are well versed in the proper way to dis-assemble, package, and ship heavy cast iron items.
